In this research round, we will be investigating right wing art, its origins, its qualities, and its importance.
As a sample of right wing art, I have provided the 81 minute Hungarian film "Feherlofia," which can be found for free on youtube with English subtitles. You can watch the film at twice the speed to view it in a 40 minute session. You are not required to analyze Feherlofia, but it is encouraged. Additionally suggested is the Hungarian film "The Tragedy of Man" which unfortunately has no subtitles but is still rich in visual information. For those who wish to look outside what has been provided, your piece must meet the following standards:
1. It must be produced after 1965.
2. Whether it is a movie, poem, painting, sculpture, or gallery of work, you must post a freely accessible digital version alongside your analysis so we can see your source material.
Questions to consider in your analysis:
1. What are the origins of this piece? What is the historical context? Who is the author(s)? What biographical information about them could we link to the values expressed in their artwork?
2. What makes the piece rightist? What differentiates it from left wing art? What are the moral lessons implicit in the piece? What cultural, racial, ethnic, ethical, teleological, epistemological, or theological information does it contain?
3. What aspects of the piece are perennial? What connections can we draw between the piece and ancient mythologies, or between the piece and popular culture today?
This round will end on Saturday, September 17th, meaning that all submissions, comments, and votes must be tallied on that day. The last day to submit a contribution will be September 14th, the last day to comment will be September 16th, and the last day to vote will be September 17th. A winner will be announced on September 18th.
The following days are currently open for submissions. No more than 1 person may make a submission each day. First come, first choice.
